As a window of opening to outside and reform of China, Shenzhen exerts more influence in the whole industry for its role of being a center of international market information, leather goods production and stock, making full use of its geographical advantage and preferential policy. In 2000, the total export of Shenzhen's leather industry exceeded US $ 1.4 billion, standing the first place in all cities and sharing 14 per cent of the total exports of Chinese leather industry.

As a special economic zone, 65 percent of leather enterprises in Shenzhen are Foreign-capital enterprises and joint venture enterprises. Many foreign influential clients come to Shenzhen to place orders, offer samples and provide materials and equipments, while a great number of domestic producers arrive to purchase the materials difficult to acquire in the hinterland. With the steady development of Chinese leather industry, Shenzhen step by step becomes the center of international leather market and leather goods production.

At present, there are more than 100 species of leather goods in Shenzhen. Many internationally famous brands have constructed their branch factories there; meanwhile, some Shenzhen-made leather cases and shoes have won widespread fame in China.
